Artist Biography

Amalia Colón-Nava, is from Boston, MA where she began her dance education at Boston Arts Academy High School. She received her BFA in Dance from The University of The Arts in May 2017, under the direction of Donna Faye Burchfield and has since been working as a freelance dance artist primarily based out of Philadelphia. As a freelance artist she has had the pleasure of working in longer process-based projects with people like Lily Kind and Curt Haworth, but has also worked on collaborations with photographers and musicians such as John Singletary, Tim Motzer, and Saleka Night. She has worked with dance companies Jo-Me Dance, ArchDream for Humankind, and MoDa co. in both repertoire and creation undertakings. She loves traveling and has had the pleasure to perform and take workshops by various artists based in France, Denmark, Canada, and Belgium. She cares for herself and her body first and foremost. Some of the educators she has studied under include Shannon Murphy (Franklin Method), Erik Erikson, Sylvie Fortin (Feldenkris), and Olive Bieringa (BMC Educator), who are working to understand the body through somatic practices, anatomical research, and wellness practices. Alongside performing she enjoys bringing dance to new communities, which she has done with Fringe Arts Community Dance Projects (Le Super Grand Continental) and Pop-Up Playgrounds and Performance (a project she devised and directed with the support of Perphorm). She has produced and directed two dance shorts with her partner Tobias Sköld, which will be shown at Fringe Arts in March as part of Philadelphia Dance Presents. She is continuing to develop her interest in multimedia dance performance and dance making. Recent movement obsessions include contact improvisation and b-girl/break dancing, but she is always re-imagining and questioning what it means to be a contemporary dancer.
